We all face moments when we want to give up – on relationships, on school, on work, on life. Not giving up when our dreams seem like they’re taking forever to complete or we face unexpected setbacks is key to accomplishing our goals.

God never promised us that we could glide to His destination for our lives without any opposition, hiccups, or headaches along the way. At some point you will encounter resistance, and that’s when you have to make the decision not to quit.

Imagine being Moses leading stubborn people around the wilderness for 40 years on their way to the promised land. Or young David waiting years to become king after he was anointed by the prophet Samuel. Or Paul being beaten, shipwrecked, stoned, and jailed many times over. Do you think any of them ever wanted to give up? I know I would have.

However, Paul understood that walking by faith would require a fight of some sort in order to win. So how can we succeed in fighting the good fight of faith? (1 Timothy 6:12) One way I find most helpful is to remind myself what God said.

2 Chronicles 15:7
But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded.

Galatians 6:9
Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

Joshua 1:9
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Psalm 37:24
though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the LORD upholds him with his hand.

Micah 7:8
When I fall, I shall arise.

Isaiah 43:2
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.

Philippians 4:13
I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

James 1:12
Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.

Isaiah 40:29-31
He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

2 Timothy 4:7
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

Hebrews 10:35-36
So don’t throw it all away now. You were sure of yourselves then. It’s still a sure thing! But you need to stick it out, staying with God’s plan so you’ll be there for the promised completion.

Prov 24:16
for the righteous falls seven times and rises again…
